I saw Lady Liberty smoking a cigarette while standing by the road.  It wasn’t exactly the Statue of Liberty.  It was more like a grizzly dude in a costume that was a really bad caricature of the Statue of Liberty.  I think he was supposed to be catching my attention and pointing me in the direction of a tax service that used the statue as a logo.

He got my attention all right.  With the top of his costume pushed half off his head so he could deal with the cigarette in his mouth, I suspect this Lady Liberty poser did not portray the image the tax company had in mind.  But then, I don’t think this guy was overly concerned with his image.  Else why would he dress in a green robe and encase his head with a giant foam likeness of Goldilocks?    He made me laugh as I drove right on by.

Why would a grown man do something so silly?  I can only assume it’s because he is getting paid to do it.  And why would a company pay a man to DO something so silly?  Because they are trying to get people’s attention.  It got my attention and gave me incentive to learn a little more about them, and that is exactly what they wanted.  My curiosity made me look.

Many years ago, a man’s curiosity lead him toward a strange site, which resulted in the freedom of his people.  Moses saw a burning bush and went to check it out.   The Bible says, “When the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him . . . ”  I read that this morning and realized again, God didn’t call to Moses until he had turned aside to look.  Moses saw something out of the ordinary and took the time to see if there just might be something wonderful at work.  When he went to check it out, he heard from God.

I wonder what Moses would have missed had he walked on by?  No less than an encounter with Almighty God, I am sure.  I wonder what I miss because I walk on by?  What opportunities will present themselves to me today?  If I experience something a little unusual, will I consider, “Could God be working here?”  God gives me a choice.  Will I look?  Will I listen?  Will I choose to move toward Him?  Or will I just laugh at the strange site . . . and drive on by?

  1. Good! Reminds me of the time I picked up the man carrying the cross on Hwy 70. He spent two nights and two days with me. A very meaningful experience.
