If they had celebrated April Fool’s day back when Jesus was around, do you think he would have participated? I’m thinking there is no doubt. He may have even started the whole thing. When you get to Heaven, just ask the two guys who took a walk on the road to Emmaus.
See Luke 24:13-32
Unique thought. And maybe when Peter cut off the ear of Malchus, some soldier hollared “your ear is missing, Malchus!” A moment later Jesus could have said, “April fools…?” His ear was back. What an example of loving one’s enemy, too.
It struck me as kinda funny. When you read the account in some translations, you can hear Jesus tell of the “foolish” people who didn’t see the truth. Jesus listens as the two guys talk about him, not knowing they are walking right beside him. Then as they near Emmaus, he “pretends” he must go further, but they convince him to stay for dinner. I just have to believe he took the walk (and the dinner) with a bit of a twinkle in his eye, holding back a big grin. Then they finally recognize him, he pops out of the scene, and they start kicking themselves for not recognizing him the whole time. Makes me grin just to think about it.
I love the Emmaus story, too. I always say it’s the story where heartburn caused heart-turn — back to Jerusalem they ran! I often wonder if Jesus said to them (in the words of Gomer Pyle) “Surprise, Surprise, Surprise” when they finally figured out it had been on the road with them all along.
