{"id":2298,"date":"2014-10-04T08:57:31","date_gmt":"2014-10-04T12:57:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/markspruill.com\/blog\/?p=2298"},"modified":"2014-10-06T18:40:16","modified_gmt":"2014-10-06T22:40:16","slug":"thats-noise-to-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/markspruill.com\/blog\/?p=2298","title":{"rendered":"That&#8217;s Noise To Me"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_2300\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2300\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/markspruill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/AnoyingNoise.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2300 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/markspruill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/AnoyingNoise-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"A sign of the times\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/markspruill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/AnoyingNoise-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/markspruill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/AnoyingNoise-112x150.jpg 112w, https:\/\/markspruill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/AnoyingNoise.jpg 576w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2300\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A sign of the times<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There is a sign at a local park that says &#8220;Annoying Noises Prohibited.&#8221; \u00a0I took a picture of it because it seemed so silly.<\/p>\n<p>I mean, who decides what&#8217;s annoying? \u00a0And how do you enforce such a crazy law? \u00a0If I bring a baby to the park and it cries, would the police come haul the poor kid off to jail? \u00a0Are the cars roaring past on the nearby highway breaking the law? \u00a0They are certainly making an annoying noise to me.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe I am just getting old and grumpy, but it seems like there are a lot of noises that annoy me these days. \u00a0The traffic noise, the background &#8220;music&#8221; that plays where I eat lunch, refrigerator motors and A\/C compressors humming, machines groaning, beeping and clacking, cell phones ringing, people yelling to be heard above the noise . . . \u00a0there is noise everywhere. \u00a0Why does it have to be so?<\/p>\n<p>Since when did people become so afraid of silence? \u00a0Perhaps it&#8217;s not really that they are afraid of what they won&#8217;t hear in the silence, but what they will hear. \u00a0For many, the noise is just a cover up. \u00a0A distraction. \u00a0A constant overpowering and drowning out of an unknown sound or a still small voice. \u00a0Maybe what they fear most is not the silence, but what they might hear in it.<\/p>\n<p>You can turn up the TV to cover the creaking noises in the house late at night. \u00a0You can plug in your ear buds and crank up the iPod music to drown out the voices. \u00a0But know this: \u00a0Even though you can&#8217;t hear it, the house is still creaking. \u00a0And that voice . . . \u00a0it&#8217;s still there . . . \u00a0waiting to be heard.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is a sign at a local park that says &#8220;Annoying Noises Prohibited.&#8221; \u00a0I took a picture of it because it seemed so silly.
