{"id":1430,"date":"2011-12-10T07:52:05","date_gmt":"2011-12-10T12:52:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/markspruill.com\/blog\/?p=1430"},"modified":"2011-12-10T07:52:05","modified_gmt":"2011-12-10T12:52:05","slug":"like-a-good-neighbor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/markspruill.com\/blog\/?p=1430","title":{"rendered":"Like a Good Neighbor . . ."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a well known insurance company that advertises their neighborly business model.\u00a0 They claim that like a good neighbor, they are there when you need them.\u00a0 However, I think it is mostly hype.\u00a0 It has been my experience that they were NOT there when I needed them.\u00a0 The incident occurred many years ago in Athens, Georgia.\u00a0 We needed help.\u00a0 They provided none.<\/p>\n<p>This blog post is not about what happened.\u00a0 Someday, I may write about that.\u00a0 This post is about neighborliness.\u00a0 Seven of us were stuck in Athens one Saturday night\u00a0because of a car problem.\u00a0 A BIG car problem.\u00a0\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t know what to do.\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t know how to get home to Duluth.\u00a0 There were no rental car places open.\u00a0 A taxi ride from Athens to Duluth would be crazy.\u00a0 We called our insurance company.\u00a0 They basically said, &#8220;There is nothing we can do right now.\u00a0 Have your car towed to the nearest facility and call us in the morning.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Our insurance company was not &#8220;there&#8221; when we needed them, but fortunately for us, someone else was.\u00a0 Someone else who had attended the same event heard of our predicament, and stepped up.\u00a0 &#8220;We&#8217;re going in that same general\u00a0direction you need to go,&#8221; they said.\u00a0 &#8220;We have a big vehicle that can carry you all.\u00a0\u00a0We&#8217;ll take\u00a0you home.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0So they did.\u00a0\u00a0 It was out of their way a bit, but they took\u00a0all seven of us home, squished in an old SUV.\u00a0 I was so grateful.\u00a0\u00a0 The next day, we ordered a gift to be sent to them.<\/p>\n<p>I have never seen or heard from them since that night.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t remember their name.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t remember where they lived.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know anything about them, other than the fact that when I needed it most, they were there.\u00a0\u00a0 They were, and always will be to me, a good neighbor.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, \u201cTeacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00a0He said to him, \u201cWhat is written in the law? What is your reading of it?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00a0So he answered and said, \u201c \u2018You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,\u2019 and \u2018your neighbor as yourself.\u2019\u201d<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00a0And He said to him, \u201cYou have answered rightly; do this and you will live.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00a0But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, \u201cAnd who is my neighbor?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0&#8211;
