{"id":1130,"date":"2011-04-05T18:08:45","date_gmt":"2011-04-05T22:08:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/markspruill.com\/blog\/?p=1130"},"modified":"2011-05-05T18:09:16","modified_gmt":"2011-05-05T22:09:16","slug":"hes-a-dentist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/markspruill.com\/blog\/?p=1130","title":{"rendered":"He&#8217;s a Dentist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My dentist fixes flat tires.\u00a0 I know because he fixed mine.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know if he does it for everybody, but I do know that he did it for me, and I was truly surprised.\u00a0\u00a0 I have been thinking about it ever since.<\/p>\n<p>Tammy and Sam had a dentist appointment to get their teeth cleaned yesterday.\u00a0 When they arrived and went in to the dentist&#8217;s office, everything appeared normal.\u00a0 They got their teeth cleaned, saw the dentist for a few minutes, then left the office as usual.\u00a0 While walking to the van, they looked up and noticed the right front tire was flat.\u00a0 Shortly after that, I got a phone call, just as I was buying my lunch.\u00a0 It\u00a0seemed I was going to spend my lunch hour helping them change a tire, so I jumped in my car and headed for the dentist&#8217;s office.<\/p>\n<p>When I arrived, I noticed a guy was standing out by Tammy&#8217;s van, helping with the task.\u00a0 As I parked and got out of the car, I was surprised to see the good Samaritan was none other than our dentist.\u00a0 He said hello and joked about getting a round tire next time instead of one that was flat on one side.<\/p>\n<p>As I focused on the task at hand,\u00a0he proceeded to help with the details.\u00a0 I jacked up the van then he loaned\u00a0me a tire iron so I could loosen the lug nuts and pull the flat tire off.\u00a0\u00a0 He and Tammy found the hole, then the good doctor\u00a0promptly pulled a patch kit out of his trunk and proceeded to repair the tire.\u00a0 By the time I got the spare on the van, he had already plugged the hole in the original tire and had whipped out a portable air compressor.\u00a0 He had\u00a0the patched tire\u00a0almost full of air by the time I tightened the last lug nut on the spare.\u00a0 \u00a0I think he was almost disappointed that I didn&#8217;t just put the original tire back on.\u00a0\u00a0 I was unsure the plug would hold.\u00a0 It has.\u00a0 I guess you should never second guess a dentist when it comes to filling holes, in teeth or tires.<\/p>\n<p>I left Tammy packing\u00a0the jack and tools back in the van and I headed back to the office.\u00a0 Ever since then, I have been thinking about this dentist-turned-mechanic who was prepared, ready, willing, and able to help in a way I would never have expected.\u00a0 I expected him to be a dentist.\u00a0 But he would not be so narrowly defined.\u00a0 Dentist is but one line on his resume.\u00a0 &#8220;Mechanic,&#8221; and &#8220;Good Samaritan&#8221; are also there.\u00a0 Perhaps there are many other lines I would never guess.<\/p>\n<p>I am still thinking about it.\u00a0 I am also wondering who else I have defined too narrowly.\u00a0 I am wondering how many people thought of Jesus as only a carpenter?\u00a0 I wonder even if\u00a0the apostle Paul\u00a0thought of himself as a missionary, or just a tent maker?\u00a0 Maybe we all define people, and even ourselves,\u00a0too narrowly.\u00a0 Maybe\u00a0we should consider there is more about people than we will ever know.\u00a0\u00a0Maybe.\u00a0 But what do I know?\u00a0 I&#8217;m just a computer guy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My dentist fixes flat tires.\u00a0 I know because he fixed mine.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know if he does it for everybody, but I do know that he did it for me, and I was truly surprised.\u00a0\u00a0 I have been thinking about it ever since.
