I think I would rather be a crow than a hummingbird.  Crows are smart.  Hummingbirds are not.  I realized this fact this past weekend, when a hummingbird flew into our garage and could not find his way back out.  The large garage door was wide open, but still, he buzzed about inside, incapable of figuring out how to fly below the raised door to freedom.

God has made all kinds of creatures and all kinds of people.  Crows are large, ugly, black and noisy.  Hummingbirds are small, cute, beautifully colorful creatures.  So, we feed hummingbirds, and shoot crows.  This is one of those situations when I really do wonder:  What would Jesus do?

  1. Maybe Crows had to become smart because we shoot them? Maybe God made them smart because He knew we WOULD shoot them? Maybe this is another one of those blessings through raindrops things. People don’t ooo and awe and feed the Crows, but they get to be smart. And smart’s not nothin’.

I agree with you, Dad. Hummingbirds are lovely, but Crows deserve some R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

Also, How could you not love a bird that can sang (no I did not misspell that) like this:

Crows you can’t help but love!

  2. Crows are now considered to be among the world’s most intelligent animals.
I feed both at my house. 🙂

  3. Mark, I read that a crow was confronted with water in a container that didn’t allow the crow to drink the water (too deep for the crow to reach). The crow gathered stones and dropped them in the container until the water level rose enough for the crow to get a drink. The article was making the point that the size of your brain did not determine intelligence as once thought. There are many, many, many creatures with much larger brains that would never figure out how to get to the water, but the crow quickly figured it out. I remember crows were always smart enough to eat all the corn they wanted on our farm. I like how they talk to each other and I know they aren’t Ravens, but they bring Edgar Allen Poe to my mind. Crows and poetry are good things.
